Last week, it was spring holiday in the south part of Holland. Spring was very invisible; we all had to bear with the rain and wind. But in between showers I found the time to go the the screenprinting workshop and make some long overdue prints.. just for fun!
This Yeti (his bark is worse than his bite) is a screenprinted version of a sketch I did for Bombay Showpig. This Amsterdam/The Hague/Leiden based band asked me to design stuff for their merchandise and website. Off course I was thrilled when I got the phonecall, because that would be the job of my dreams! I was extra happy when I heard the song below, because it reminds me of PrettyGirls Make Graves a little bit. More tunes and artwork will follow!

When Nanna and me were at some opening in some gallery, we ran into our old teacher of the Art Academy. In between sipping cheap wine and nibbling euroshopper nuts she asked us if we wanted to submit an idea for the next project week called Slow-Lab which focussed on old techniques and handwork. There was nothing slow about the whole thing cause we had to submit the idea practically within the hour. But we pulled it off and called our project: Dust Off
The idea was to let the students take a look in their grandma's attic, the dusty drawer, or to let them go to the thriftstore to find something old and forgotten. They had to let that object be an inspiration for something new using various techniques. Because this assignment was pretty vague we made them take a look at some wonderful artwork done by Merel Karhof, Sarah Illenberger and Richard Saja. They master this dusting off thing!
I have to say, the students went all out! I've had an awesome and inspriational week and have never seen such a hardworking group. Most of the participants used techniques that they'd never used before, and I really respect that. Unfortunately I couldn't put everone's work up here, but only a small selection.

After a few weeks of hard work we finally saw some daylight again ... because our new website is finished!! Everything is new, it looks gooood, it has an actual navigation system and some impressive elements, such as drop down menu’s and a shopping cart. Oh jeez, we feel so modern and improved!

The print is filled with lame jokes, weird animals and even weirder: Patty Brard (Holland's most repulsive tv host, ex-popstar and survivor of a few medical experiments). It is signed by Dutch Dolls and it measures 42 x 29 cm. We printed it in red, black and dark gray on heavyweight paper. If you want some Dutch Dolls art on your wall, act now! We’ve only got a limited number of prints!

Everyone that was ever a part of the 'screenprinting-industry' knows that this section of printmaking involves big muscles, patience and the ability to bear the maniacs that you always seem to run into in the workshop. Believe me, Dutch Dolls have had their share. Even though we have been screenprinting for almost ten years, the assistant at the workshop only seems to feel like a true assistant when he forces his methods on you. Probably very well meant, but ooh... the ego-clash.
That being said (I HAD to get that off my chest), I must admit that I'm pretty saiked about our latest print. It's an illustration that Nanna and me did together a while ago (you may have seen it in an earlier post), now printed on heavy off white paper in a dark grey ink. It will be for sale as a special promotion when we launch our new and superimproved website that Dutch Doll/whizkid Nanna has been slaving over for the last couple of months. It's going to be sooooo good!!!
