How bugs taste
Today, I swallowed a bug. A big one.
How does that happen, you ask. Well.. it's easy. I was riding my bike, faking unintelligence (read: my mouth was hanging open). I didn't realize that I was doing this until something flew inside the hangar. While gathering spit to try and swallow it, I was thinking what kind of bug it could have been. It didn't have a massive body, It didn't sting me, I don't think it was furry, but it DID have a lot of paws. I could tell, 'cause I think the bug left some in my throat while the rest of it went down my gullet. The paws stayed in my throat until I ate something chunky: bread.
At home, the internet gave me some answers to the question 'but what did it look like'? Below, you can see some of the species you are most likely to swallow when you do as I did. They're quite hideous, especially up close..
As I write this, the bug is most likely digested. But the image of the insect being in my throat, struggling for it's life is stuck in my head. Therefor, I'm thinking about a Bug that I like. A real noisy one. One with a buzzing bass that a million flies could not produce.

An ode to kapsalons and poliopigeons
All you Rotterdammers: if you happen to come across one of those piles of NL10-magazines this week, make sure to pick up a copy (it's free :-), ‘cause we’re in it! We made an ‘ode to Rotterdam’: a spread packed with lame jokes about local heroes, likes, dislikes, and of course the poliopigeon. If you don't live in Roffa, or you're just too lazy to pick up the physical thing, you can click on the image above to view it in all its glory.

Wie heiss ist der kaffee?
Finally!!! Dutch Dolls cross something else besides that windy erasmusbridge; THE BORDER. We were asked to take part in an exhibition in Gartenstudio, Berlin, which opens next friday the 17th. I don't know who came up with the idea to make coffee the main subject, but that would be our favourite thing in the world!
As I mentioned before, my screenprinting-equipment is not taking me seriously. Or I should just consider a different career that does not involve screens and paint - jeeezzz. After some very necessary cursing and the impressive launch of a spoon, I managed to produce some good prints. Too bad we can't be there ourselves, but if you're in the neighbourhood, check out that cute studio in Kreuzberg. Which is only the coolest area of Berlin!
Of course, I can't resist posting Siw Malmqvists krautclassic Wie Heiss Ist Der kaffee?
Get it here.

Sour times
So today I wanted to write a review of the Micachu & The Shapes show at Buffalo Bar last Wednesday night. I had already missed them twice, so I was very happy my time had finally come. But when I arrived at the scene it turned out Micachu had CANCELED at the very last moment. What is wrong here?? Is this the story of my life? WTF??? I was so sad and disappointed I couldn’t be bothered with the other bands anymore (sorry other bands). Instead I ordered a WHISKEY SOUR at the bar, to match my mood...
I’m not going to post any songs by Micachu here. I can’t bear it. No, I’m giving you a song about WHISKEY and a song about SOUR. Cheers.
Cat Power - Moonshiner (Bob Dylan cover). Get it here (YSI).
Portishead - Sour Times (Live at Roseland NYC). Get it here (YSI).

The Scrollator
Due to an upcoming exhibition in Dutch Dolls' favorite city Berlin, I was forced to go up to the attic for some serious screenprinting. As I was messing up every single print (for real!), I felt the need to suddenly start cleaning up the place (which is a miracle by itself). Moving stuff around I all of a sudden recognized the brilliance of my computer setup. I kinda put it out there like that a few weeks ago because I was in a hurry and didn't have too much space. The antique Imac, with the antique tunes, on the brand new rollator should be on exhibition in Berlin, not the screenprints.
Here's some of the sweet oldness from that 1998-version of Itunes. Not just great for screwing up your prints, but also great for dancing. Perhaps those two things were connected..

Too cool for school
Last week, we were asked to go back to the Willem de Kooning Academy (artschool Rotterdam) to teach a project week. It was cool to be back at the place where we met about ten years ago. Back then we were class-ditching, coffee-drinking, totally infantile wannabe-rebels. But this time we were forced to loose the attitude, and be serious about design, concepts, presentation and attendance.
I think we pulled it off..
The project was about cultural diversity, so we sent our students out on the streets of Rotterdam and made them collect images, ideas, food and what not. Demanding as we are, we expected a finished product to come out of this urban adventure after just four days!! Which was quite ambitious for the amount of time, but nothing in this life comes easy..
After a few days of hard work, the students had to present their piece, and the outcome was quite surprising. Some pieces were experimental and abstract, and others were more defined and finished. See the stop motion movie below and find out what happens when granny goes on a holiday for the first time (!) in her life. Inspired by the trashy streets of Rotterdam.
After office hours we refound the attitude and it was bbq-time in the park... with a big fire and of course a 'visit' of some cops. Oh sweet spring! And oooh sweet smell of smoke and burned sausages in hair, clothes and uhmm.. everything!
